Q. |
What sort of children's activities take place at Ty Ni? |
| A. | For the children, we have two attactive playrooms where the children are supervised by qualified playworkers. The children take part in a range of stimulating activities and parents are encouraged to join in the play. One of the principal aims of Ty Ni is to enable children particularly under 11s to develop their full potential, thus one of our most exciting ventures is to offer parents and children a literary support programme. We plan to work with the basic skills agency, speech therapists and special needs co-ordinators to help children and parents. |
Q. |
What activities take place at Ty Ni for parents? |
| A. | In keeping with our aim to enhance family life through programmes and activities based on self help and community involvement, a wide range of activities take place at Ty Ni for parents. For example, we run parenting courses which provide advice on how to deal with children's difficult behaviour. This helps parents to understand their children better, communicate more effectively with them and offer parents effective alternatives to smacking their children. We also, in conjunction with St John's Ambulance Service, run First Aid courses. Additionally, we work with the Wales Pre-School Playgroup Association Course to provide courses to help parents and carers with how to play with young children. Certificates are awarded at the end of each course. Self-esteem is raised and parents are encouraged to think about re-training. |

Q. |
What other services does Ty Ni offer? |
| A. | During the summer we rent a caravan either at Pendine or Tenby and families in turn take short holidays of about three days each. This provides a welcome break for many of our families who would never be able to afford a holiday. We also aim to have a family day trip each Tuesday during school holidays. Other activities include a keep fit class, art classes, sugar craft, knitting blankets for Oxfam and healthy eating cookery mornings. |
Q. |
Which voluntary and statutory bodies does Ty Ni work with? |
| A. | We believe in providing a multi-disciplinary approach to services for children and families and as such work with and receive support from many different agencies. For example, we work with Health Visitors to provide a venue for a support group of mums with twins. They meet once a fortnight and the group has been a great success. We also work with Midwives to provide a comfortable setting for breast-feeding support. The benefits to a baby of being breast-fed are enormous so it is important that mums are given expert advice in the early weeks when problems occur. |
